Lock down your Android in 15 minutes

What you’ll be able to do afterward

• Your phone requires your fingerprint, face, or a strong PIN for anything that matters.
• A snatched phone locks itself and can’t quietly disappear from your account.
• The advertising ID that follows you between apps is gone.
• If the phone vanishes, you can find, lock, or erase it from any browser.

The plays

1. Set a strong screen lock Settings → Security & privacy → Device unlock → Screen lock → PIN (6+ digits)

   What this just did: made the lock — the key to everything else on this list — an actual barrier. Add fingerprint or face unlock on the same screen for convenience on top, not instead.

2. Turn on theft protection Settings → Security & privacy → Device unlock → Theft protection → turn on Theft Detection Lock and Offline Device Lock

   What this just did: a phone snatched from your hand locks itself when it detects the grab motion, and going offline no longer keeps it usable.

3. Hide sensitive notifications on the lock screen Settings → Notifications → Notifications on lock screen → Hide silent conversations and notifications (or "Don't show notifications")

   What this just did: your messages and login codes no longer display to whoever is holding the phone.

4. Shorten the screen timeout Settings → Display → Screen timeout → 1 minute

   What this just did: a phone left on a table locks itself before it wanders off unlocked.

5. Make sure Find My Device is on Settings → Security & privacy → Find My Device → on (check that "Store recent location" is allowed)

   What this just did: a lost phone is findable, lockable, and erasable from android.com/find — from any browser, any device.

6. Delete your advertising ID Settings → Privacy → Ads → Delete advertising ID

   What this just did: removed the serial number the ad industry uses to stitch your activity together across apps. Apps can still ask — they just get nothing stable back.

7. Audit the big three permissions Settings → Security & privacy → Privacy controls → Permission manager → Location / Microphone / Camera — downgrade anything that doesn't obviously need it

   What this just did: cut standing access to your location, mic, and camera down to apps with a real reason. "Only while in use" beats "All the time," and "Don't allow" beats both.

8. Confirm Play Protect is scanning Play Store → your profile icon → Play Protect → Scan — and check scanning is on under the gear icon

   What this just did: kept Android's built-in malware scanning active, which catches most of the junk that impersonates real apps.

• A stolen or lost phone — grab-detection locks it, Find My Device finds it, and nothing readable sits on the lock screen.
• The easy tracking — no advertising ID to follow you, permissions trimmed to apps that earn them.
• Impersonator apps — Play Protect stays on watch.

Fifteen minutes, nothing to install, nothing to pay for. Menu names shift a little between Android brands — if a path doesn’t match, searching the Settings app for the bolded words gets you there.
